There are so many essential oils that it can be hard to know what each one does or when to use them. We've put together a list of essential oils that can be used for range of conditions from headaches to insomnia.
Using Essential Oils As Part of Your Homemade Medicine Kit
In an age where we’re living longer but not necessarily experiencing good health. People are taking more and more prescribed medication. Food allergies, allergies, digestive issues, headaches, insomnia, depression and anxiety have all skyrocketed over the last 20 years.
Our reliance on both prescribed and over the counter medication has made it easy to take a pill rather than addressing the real problem. More often than not conventional medicine seeks to mask the symptoms rather than cure the problem.
We had got so used to being sick that we have forgotten what it feels like to be well. If we even bother going to the doctor, we accept the idea that this is normal and nothing can be done about it. We take our prescription and take the pills that mask the symptoms whilst never getting to the root of the problem.
Most of the common illnesses we experience in modern times can be traced back to the modern lifestyle. We are exposed to so many chemicals, not just from pollution. Toxins are everywhere, from the food we eat to the skincare products we put on our skin. We are experiencing higher levels of stress and pressure than ever before. So taking pharmaceutical medication is just adding more chemicals to our already overloaded system.
Essential oils are natural alternatives that we can use not as a preventative measure, not just when an illness arises but as natural alternatives to many over the counter medicines. For example Rosemary essential oil can be used to relieve headaches, you can put a few drops in a diffuser or a bowl of hot water and inhale the oils as they disperse. You can put a few drops on a tissue or on a handkerchief inhale. Essential oils can be used alongside conventional treatments with no ill effects. They can be used alongside each other and other complementary medicines such as flower essences or herbal remedies quiet safely to heal the body naturally.
Most people will think of lavender essential oil when they think of Essential oils. I often hear people saying that the scented lavender pillow or the lavender sleep spray they brought to help them sleep didn’t work. The problem isn’t that lavender doesn’t work, it’s that these products often contain chemical fragrance. These fake fragrance may smell like pure essential oils but they lack any of the medicinal properties.
Essential oils are versatile natural approaches to help. You can make your own soothing antiseptic cream by adding a few drops of tea tree essential oil to some base cream. If you don’t have any cream add a few drops to a spray bottle of warm water and shake well to mix the oil. Using essential oils in a diffuser or adding to a warm bath are ways of reducing stress, relieving headaches, colds, and easing anxiety.
As a certified Aromatherapist I always advise my clients to seek I seek medical advice for any illnesses they have, particularly if these go on for a period of time and don’t improve after a few days of using alternative medicine. I also feel a responsibility to be honest about the healing potential complementary therapies such as aromatherapy. Whilst I love and am passionate about natural remedies, it would be foolish and irresponsible to make false claims about their healing powers. I would not advise any client to abandon conventional treatments, nor disregard the advice of your medical team in favour of alternative healthcare such as aromatherapy. Essential oils can be used alongside these more conventional treatments and can be extremely beneficial.
There are so many oils to choose from that you can pick an oil not only based on its healing properties but also on its scent. Some people prefer oils with floral notes, whist others may prefer the woodier tones for example. Whichever your preference with so many to choose from you’ll be sure to find one that ticks all the boxes.
